Sculpting Sound. The Unlikely Bond of Satie and Brancusi.

Constantin Brancusi, Sleeping Muse

Ascending Towards Infinity – Brancusi’s Endless Column as a Portal to the Eternal

Constantin Brancusi, Endless Column (1938), Part of a larger ensemble in Târgu Jiu, Romania

Constantin Brancusi, Endless Column (1938) Some sculptures demand that you walk around them, examining their curves, their weight, their defiance of gravity. Others, like Constantin Brancusi’s Endless Column, command your gaze upward, urging you to follow their rhythm into the…

Relief with a Hunting Centaur, Egypt, Oxyrhynchus Relief with a Hunting Centaur, Egypt, Oxyrhynchus (?), 330-360 AD, limestone.
In Egyptian funerary art, the hunting scene was not only understood as a way of life truly worthy of man, but also as a reference to the defeat of chaos represented by wild animals.
This relief may have been part of a longer frieze, and depicts a centaur attacking an antelope. In Roman art centaurs may belong to the sphere of Dionysos, who was identified in Egypt with Osiris, while the desert antelope belonged to Seth, the murderer of Osiris and the lord of chaos.
The centaur thus associates the person buried in the tomb with Diony-sos, while the capture of the antelope alludes to the triumph of Osiris.
As a symbol of demonic disorder, the antelope remained an important motif in the Christian art of Egypt as well.
