Visions in motion – Graffiti and echoes of Futurism

The exhibition “ Visions in motion – Graffiti and echoes of Futurism  ” will explore for the first time the relationship between two of the most relevant artistic movements of the first and second half of the  20th century : Italian Futurism and American Graffiti.

From 30 November to 23 March 2025

Fabbrica del Vapore, Via Giulio Cesare Procaccini, 4, Milan

The expansion of an art aimed at forgetting the harshness of the Seventies, thus inaugurating a new decade of excesses and innovations through the use of spray cans as new technical supports, graffiti artists gave vent to their most intimate impulses shouting to the world their sense of belonging to a certain ethnic-cultural group.

“Visions in motion” symbolizes how the paths of these two movements run on two perfectly parallel tracks: both conceive the future not as the end point of a process, but as a continuous energy, a flow, and therefore an eternal present in which the creative act becomes the tool with which the artist is able to represent the movement, speed, and flow of his era, becoming a witness of his time.

The exhibition curated by Carlo McCormick with the collaboration of Edoardo Falcioni and Maria Gregotti and with a critical essay in the catalog by art historian Elena Pontiggia will be organized in the industrial space of the Fabbrica del Vapore in Milan, evoking that urban atmosphere typically unprecedented in which these two currents now consecrated by world culture were born and developed.

Fabbrica del Vapore is a space of the Municipality of Milan aimed at carrying out interventions for the promotion, enhancement and use of contemporary visual and performative art. Fabbrica del Vapore is so called because until 1935, the space belonged to the Italian company Carminati Toselli which built materials and vehicles for steam railways and tramways, including the conical 1928 tram, so avant-garde that it is still today we can see it circulating in the Milan city network. The immense production stopped in the thirties. From then on, the spaces began to host the most diverse activities, until the Municipality decided to restructure the area and entrust some spaces to cultural and creative laboratories and directly manage the larger ones: Cathedral, Cisterns, Messina and Columns for use them as spaces for exhibitions and other cultural activities. In Fabbirca del Vapore artistic residencies and ateliers are organized for selected artists in relation to specific projects.
